There’s an anxious silence in many industries, isn’t there? We talk about AI’s potential, its power to transform, but beneath the surface, there’s a flicker of fear. A lot of us wonder if these powerful digital assistants we’re creating are building a world that won’t have a place for us.

Is it a valid question? Especially as we see AI models evolve from single-purpose tools into something far more intelligent?

For a while, we were impressed by AI models that do one thing exceptionally well: generate text, create an image, or write a piece of code. But we all now know that the true power lies in a new, unified spell — the next great ethereal wall — where these capabilities begin to blur.

Yes, I’m talking about multimodal AI.

These models are the core of the GenAI evolution, capable of understanding and generating content across different formats, seamlessly. They are the true digital assistants, the ones that can see, hear, and speak your entire business and aren’t just creating a new market but a new kind of professional.

So, where are we seeing this in action?

• In Medicine: A doctor can input a patient’s medical history (text), recent MRI scans (images), and a voice recording of their symptoms (audio). The multimodal AI can then analyse all of it at once to flag potential issues and assist in creating a more holistic and precise diagnosis.

• In Creative Industries: I’ve seen on a video how a designer can provide a mood board of images (visual data) and a few paragraphs of brand guidelines (text) to a multimodal model. The AI can then generate not just new design concepts, but also the accompanying marketing copy and even a short video clip for social media. All from a single creative spark.

• In Retail: Imagine a customer service bot that can listen to a customer describing a problem, analyse a photo of a broken product they uploaded, and check the inventory in real-time, all before responding with a personalized solution.

These aren’t just incremental upgrades. They are the beginning of a powerful alchemy. And no! It’s not about replacing us. It’s about giving us a new kind of partner. For me, the real opportunity goes beyond saving time; we shift our focus from the mechanics of our work to focus on our unique human characteristics.

Hopefully, multimodal AI will give us the space to focus on what truly matters:

• Understand people’s needs and perspectives.

• Step back and see the bigger picture.

• Make wise decisions without the constant rush.

We’re at a turning point, and it shouldn’t be about denying the change. We must focus on harnessing the power of generative AI, which is at the core of what’s next. Multimodal AI won’t consume our roles — or at least not all of them — but it is, and will continue to, transform the workplaces. Our job is to ride the wave, not fight the tide.

The bright side? If we take the real opportunities, AI isn’t replacing us!

The Cloud Kingdom: A Realm of Accessibility and Scale

The appeal of cloud-based Large Language Models (LLMs) is clear. They offer boundless scalability and accessibility. With platforms like OpenAI’s GPT series, Google’s Gemini, or Microsoft’s Copilot, one can access the most advanced models without a massive upfront investment in hardware. This choice is ideal for rapid prototyping and businesses with variable workloads.

For example, a startup can quickly integrate a cloud LLM to build a new feature or a customer service chatbot, bringing their product to market with almost no capital expenditure. Similarly, a marketing team launching a temporary campaign can leverage the “pay-as-you-go” model, paying only for the computing power they use.

The convenience is undeniable, but it comes with a choice. When using free or standard-tier services, your data is usually used to train the model, which poses a significant intellectual property risk.

Enterprise-level plans offer robust confidentiality and better protection, but there are still other considerations: data is sent to and from external servers, which can introduce a potential vulnerability during transmission. There is also a shared responsibility for security, meaning you must trust your vendor’s ability to protect your data from a breach.

Before handing over our most guarded secrets and proprietary data, we must ask ourselves a critical question:

- Are we sure we risking the very core of our business strategy?

The Local Sanctuary: The Fortress of Control

For businesses where data is their most valuable asset, a local LLM deployment is often the best strategic choice. This is the fortress where you maintain absolute control over your information, ensuring it never leaves your secure environment. It is especially crucial for industries with strict regulations.

Consider a large law firm with decades of privileged client files. They want to use an LLM to analyse contracts and summarize documents, but sending that data to a third-party cloud is simply not an option due to strict legal and ethical duties. By fine-tuning open-source models like Llama 3 or Mistral 7B on their own private servers, they gain the speed and insight of AI without ever letting their sensitive information leave their sanctuary, creating their own private knowledge management system..

On a smaller scale, I recently built a local application to support a small business with their COBOL solution. The client data and proprietary code were far too sensitive to risk exposing to a third-party cloud service for things like documentation, bug identification, or code optimization.

It was clear to me that I couldn’t trade their soul — their intellectual property — for the convenience of the cloud. The result is an AI assistant that is not just intelligent but wise, grounded in the company’s unique context.

This kind of setup allows you to get all the benefits of AI without ever having your valuable information leaving your physical control.

Of course, this path comes with a price. It requires a significant upfront investment in powerful hardware and a dedicated team with the technical expertise to manage the system. But for those who value long-term control and data sovereignty, this investment is an act of empowerment.

💡 What if you don’t have to choose?

The Hybrid Approach: Blending Both Realms

Businesses can also adopt hybrid approaches, blending the agility of the cloud with the security of a local setup.

The smart move is to use each for what it does best. Use the cloud for general-purpose tasks, rapid prototyping, and high-volume, non-sensitive workloads. Simultaneously, run a fine-tuned local model for your sensitive data and strategic tasks.

A company might use a cloud LLM for its public-facing marketing copy while running a local, fine-tuned model for its most sensitive internal analysis.

This phased approach reduces the risks of the entire process. It allows you to start quickly and begin generating value from AI while building a long-term strategy that protects what matters most.

What is at the core of what’s next?

The choice between a local and cloud LLM is no longer an “either/or” scenario but a strategic decision based on your unique business needs and risk tolerance. Before you commit, ask yourself:

• What is the problem? Don’t start with the technology, start with the business challenge you need to solve.

• What data is involved? The sensitivity of your data is a critical factor. Let it be your guide.

• What are your technical capabilities? Acknowledge the risks of both approaches and choose the one your team is best equipped to manage.

The power is no longer confined to a single tower; it is being harnessed in the cloud, on our local devices, and in the space between. The wisest decision is the one that empowers you not just to build new things, but to protect what you’ve already built.

AI isn’t just theory anymore, it’s an active participant in our daily tasks. Businesses are beginning to see GenAI as a catalyst for a complete workplace revolution. This is about enhancing task execution in ways we’re only just beginning to grasp.

• In Education, it’s a powerful assistant for teachers, grading assignments and powering chatbots that provide instant feedback. The results are already there to be seen, such as better learning outcomes and reduced administrative workload.

• In Finance, GenAI is a guardian against risk, analyzing market data for smarter decisions and detecting fraud with increased confidence. For leaders, this means more accurate forecasts and enhanced risk management.

• In Healthcare, this technology is advancing medical imaging and assisting in early disease detection, which enables patient-specific and more precise diagnoses.

• I’ve read articles and news on how GenAI can accelerate drug discovery by identifying new molecules and predicting their properties, leading to significant advancements in treatment and lowering R&D costs for the Pharmaceutical industry.

From General Strengths to Powerful Wisdom

While the possibilities are exciting, a general-purpose model is like a brilliant mind with vast knowledge but no understanding of your specific needs. It doesn’t know your business context, your private data, or your unique challenges. The real magic happens when you give it a purpose, when you teach it about your specific world.

This is what we call Grounding, the art of providing a powerful Large Language Model (LLM) with specific, relevant, and up-to-date information that it wasn’t trained on. Grounding is what allows LLMs to work with the true knowledge that lives within your organization’s own documents, reports, and databases, turning a brilliant generalist into a wise specialist.

So, how do you ground a model?

The most common and effective technique is Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Think of it as giving the AI an elegant, curated library to draw from before it answers a question. In this process, the LLM first retrieves information from your own internal archives — be they documents, reports, or databases — before generating a final, more informed response by using that information.

RAG augments the LLM response generation process with the retrieved context from the specific documents or data.

This simple, yet powerful process lets you:

• Create custom AI assistants that answer questions based on your company’s private knowledge base.

• Tailor marketing messages using up-to-the-minute market data.

• Automate specialized tasks with high precision, guided by your own best practices.

I’ve tried this myself. As a researcher, I wanted to understand why some of my published papers were accepted while others were rejected. A general-purpose LLM couldn’t have that context, so I used RAG to connect it to my own body of work. The model was then able to analyze the patterns, suggest key details I might have missed, and help me rewrite my work for a higher chance of success. The tool didn’t guarantee an approved paper, but it was an incredibly useful guide. For me, the real value was in how it showed me my own writing biases, something I couldn’t see on my own.

You may have also heard of fine-tuning. While powerful, it’s a different, more complex and expensive spell, following a path where you partially retrain the model on your data. In my experience, it’s often time-consuming and requires more technical expertise. My advice? Start with RAG. It’s agile, powerful, and perfect for most use cases where you need to infuse context. Consider fine-tuning later when you need to optimize for a highly specific task and RAG alone isn’t enough.

The problem isn’t the AI. It’s that we haven’t learned how to ask properly. It’s time to learn how to command your ethereal assistant.

The Core Formula: Five Ingredients for a Powerful Prompt

First, stop thinking of a prompt as a single question. The ‘wow’ results come from layering your instructions into one powerful command.

A well-crafted prompt includes these core ingredients:

• 🔹 Role: Who is the AI? (e.g., “Act as a wise oracle...”)

• 🔹 Audience: Who is this for? (e.g., “...for a non-technical startup founder.”)

• 🔹 Goal: What’s the final objective? (e.g., “...summarize this Q2 earnings report.”)

• 🔹 Constraints: What format or tone? (e.g., “...in 5 clear bullet points; use a formal tone.”)

• 🔹 Context: What secret knowledge should it use? (e.g., “...focus only on growth metrics vs. last quarter.”)

This formula is your blueprint for turning a fuzzy wish into a precise, high-impact result.

Putting it to Practice: From Simple Wish to Expert Command

Now, let’s see that formula in action. You can frame any task at these three levels of detail.

Task: “Summarize this article.”

🟢 Level 1: The Simple Wish “Summarize this article.” → Result: A generic, one-size-fits-all summary. No real wow effect here.

🟡 Level 2: The Structured Prompt “Act as a content strategist. Summarize this article in 3 key takeaways, tailored for busy startup founders who want to save time using AI.” → Result: Instantly more useful. You’ve given the AI a purpose and an audience.

🔴 Level 3: The Expert Command “Act as a senior business advisor. Turn this article into a 2-minute email update for my busy team lead. Keep it practical and informal, and highlight one specific action item they could apply today.” → Result: A potent, context-aware result that feels like it was conjured by an external force who read your mind.

This is Where Real Skill is Forged

When you practice this progression, you’re not just learning what to write. You’re learning how to think about context, audience, and format. That’s when prompt engineering becomes your professional superpower.

This method is a game-changer, whether you’re designing courses, refining business communications, or simply looking to automate your own tasks with a touch of brilliance.

But wait, with the advances of new LLMs such as chatGPT-5 and Gemini 2.5 Pro, is it still a thing?

When a prompt as basic as “Generate an image mixing Brazilian Carnival with the great Chinese dragon, symbol of that country. Make sure to clearly convey both, China’s culture and Brazilian’s carnival tradition” sent to Gemini 2.5 Flash Imagen creates such a beautiful image seen in this article, we may underestimate the true might of prompt engineering.

However, while it remains highly relevant, its nature is evolving. Crafting effective prompts is still crucial, bridging the gap from “Good” to “Great” results, transforming an “Ordinary” response into a “Seer-like” insight.
